The Hero’s Journey
In the Power of Myth, Joseph Campbell related the hero’s journey to adolescence: “It’s a going and a return, the hero cycle…We’re in our childhood for at least 14 years and then to get out of that posture of…psychological dependency, into one of psychological self responsibility, requires a death and a resurrection and that is the basic motif of the hero journey.” This talk explores the hero’s journey as it relates to adolescence as well as the parenting of teenagers. $150 for 1 hour.
Adultism
Adultism refers to the behaviors adults practice toward children, often unconsciously, that limit a child’s natural curiosity, zest, expressiveness, and ability to honestly express their feelings. Educating adults and teens about adultism is one of my passions and I am available to speak to your class, school or group on this topic free of charge. Developmental Assets
Extensive research with over 350,000 children has been done by The Search Institute to identify 40 developmental assets for children. The more of these assets a child has, the greater their likelihood to avoid risky behaviors and to choose positive behaviors. What assets does your child already have? Which are missing? This interactive talk includes an assessment to help parents determine where they can help build assets for their children for the best result. $150 for 1 hour.
Multiple Intelligence Theory
Howard Gardner proposes seven types of human intelligence: verbal, mathematical, spatial, kinesthetic (movement), self-reflective, interpersonal, and musical. This is a helpful perspective when a child is not strong in the verbal and/or mathematical abilities that allow for success in traditional schools. This talk educates parents, helps them focus on their child’s strengths and provides strategies to empower their child’s natural gifts. $150 for 1 hour.
Indigo Children
Indigo children are those who display certain characteristics of self-confidence, non-conformity, difficulty with absolute authority, seemingly anti-social behavior, and other traits that indicate a higher level of consciousness or psychic ability. This perspective on “difficult” children, whether true or new age wishful thinking, helps parents reframe what’s going on with their children and offers alternate ways of dealing with them. $150 for 1 hour. |
